An Xbox 360 is a very important piece of equipment for all those reading this article. And like all modern machinery; they are subjected to breakages due to negligence, carelessness, or age. Whatever the reason is behind your Xbox 360 breaking, it’s probably going be expensive and time consuming to get a professional in to get it fix. Hence, this article is aimed at presenting you with a DIY (“do-it-yourself”) guide to fixing the most common problem that encountered on Xbox – a broken DVD drive.

The first signs of a broken Xbox 360 DVD drive may include: the games freezing repeatedly during play; the dreaded error message “Dirty Disc Error” or “Not Reading Disc” showing up on your screen; and most commonly, when there are three flashing red lights around the Xbox 360 power button (nicknamed the “Red Ring of Death” or “Red Lights of Death”). When these signs appear, you can probably equate your broken Xbox 360 to a DVD drive problem, we will discuss some freezing remedies later.

The first and most obvious solution (but not the cheapest), is to buy a replacement DVD drive. But if you want to try fixing it yourself, consider these steps:

How to Resolve Dirty Disk Errors-

  1. Use a standard CD/ DVD Cleaner. However, if you don’t have a dick cleaning, wipe the DVD very gently with a clean smooth cloth; it’s best to do this in a circular motion from the inside to the outside. Even if this only cleans the disc and lens, it’s probably enough to get the system working again.
  1. The next few steps now assume you know the type of DVD drive you have and how to open it:
  • Clean the lens and mirror manually.
  • Adjust the Potentiometer (pot) on the laser.
  • Replace the Laser in the DVD drive.

It is worth re-aligning the DVD tray if you have very obvious DVD problem because the drive will not open or close, stay opened or closed, or makes grinding or popping noises. If you’ve done this before, re-aligning the tray for an Xbox 360 is similar to that of other CD players and CD changers as well.  This is can be done by simply removing the tray, aligning the internal parts to their starting position, and re-inserting the tray. This is often enough to bring a drive back from the dead

Freezing Problems:

Now to the freezing problems as promised earlier. The cause of the problem is often overheating. The overheating forces the connection between the GPU and the CPU to fail as the motherboard bends from the heat. The “freezing” is simply a lockup remedy in attempts to re-flow the GPU (graphical processing unit). The first recommendation is to probably move your Xbox to a cooler area, and not to cover it, a fan may also help. The next thing you can do is to take it in for repair to re-flow the G.P.U and/or the C.P.U if the case persists.
